In the beginning of your career it is very likely that you realized heavily and sample libraries. This is all good and well if you want to stay at the same level within your production, but for those who are ready to go to that next level, a portable sampler just might be what you’re looking for.

The more complex your own sample library is the more dynamic you can make your productions. But at times it is almost impossible to find the sound that you have bouncing in your head. Some samplers can be very pricey and for the sake of those that were not born with a silver spoon in their mouths, we’ll look at a portable sampler/looper that won’t milk you dry. The beauty of this product is that it records with CD quality and can give you an instant replay on the sample you have just made. For live performing DJs this is an awesome feature because it means that you actually have a mini loop station, which means that you can mix fresh samples live without stopping the music. This makes it more than your average sampler.

But not always can you use a natural sound within your mix. At times you’ll find that the sample that you did didn’t come out so “clean” as you would have wanted. That is why samples should always be checked before using in a live set, and to do this all you need to do is get on your preferred Production software and do the necessary tweaking.

Samples can be a great way to give your music that unique edge that is so desperately needed to be a success in the electronic world. Regarding Electronic Music, I have a few suggestions for samples that can give you just that edge.

Personally you should not just sample for the sake of sampling, but rather organize your samples. For instance, make a folder and title it “Drums”. Then go out and bang the hell out of anything you find, sample it and take it to your drum folder. Later in post editing you will do the right tweaking and place it back into the folder. For instance a dirty kick drum could be taken from an aluminum trashcan, add a bit of reverb, maybe put a gate on and boost the bass. All of a sudden you have a metallic kick drum that no one else in the world has.
